Bergenfield Scouting

This site decated to the men and women scout leaders,
who gave their time freely to make scouting fun.

All great things have a begining, this is one of them.

Listed below are Brownies from 1953 – about 50 of whom eventually graduated in the class of 1961!
So, if you’ve got any old pics lying around, this list might help you identify them.

109 Brownies Take Part in Fly-Up Rites, Join 14 Intermediate Girl Scout Troops

The Girl Scout Association of Bergenfield held its annual flyup ceremony at the Bergenfield High School auditorium Sunday afternoon.

Two girls from each of the 14 Intermediate Troops marched with their troop and American flags down the center aisle, facing toward the center, to the music of Mrs. Florence SLOCUM.  The 109 Brownie flyups, led by their leaders, paraded under the flags, and sat in front of the auditorium.  Mrs. Virginia HINEY, program chairman, gave a short talk explaining flying-up from Brownie to the rank of Intermediate Scouts.

The candle ceremony, three larger candles representing the Girl Scout promise, and 10 smaller candles representing the laws, were lit by members of the girl planning board, Myrna DRAEGER and Kathy AGAYOFF, while Virginia SUMMERS and Linda HOFFMAN led the flyups in the recitation of promise and laws.

After singing “When E’er You Make a Promise, led by Mrs. SLOCUM, the Brownie leaders pinned the wings on the girls and Intermediate Leaders, Mrs. Helen HENDRICKSON,  Mrs. Vi LOUIS,  Mrs. Evelyn VERALL,  and Mrs. Dorothy RICHMOND,  were on stage to pin the Girl Scout pins on the girls.

Mrs. Elizabeth HOLLENBECK, president, then welcomed the girls into Intermediate Scouting.  At the conclusion of the ceremony, taps were led by Mrs. SLOCUM, accompanied on the trumpet by John SLOCUM.  Refreshments of ice cream were served as the girls filed out.

The Scout flyups were:
