Max Fisherman and his wife, Sadie, opened Fishies in 1924. Their daughter, Jeanette Greenwood, took over the store in 1956 with her husband, John. The store was originally known as Fisherman's and then Greenwood's Deli, but without an outdoor sign everyone knew it as "Fishies".  It had been a favorite after-school stop for Lincoln students all those years. The closing will be more than the passing of a neighborhood novelty; it's the end of an era.  

John Greenwood passed away in 1993 and Mrs. Greenwood ran the store by herself. Unfortunately, with health problems and being 82 years old, Mrs. Greenwood felt it was time to close up shop.  

As a tribute to Ms. Greenwood (a former Lincoln School student herself) and her family, the students of Lincoln School, led by Principal John Alfieri, honored her with a ceremony on the Lincoln chool playground with a "Thank You"  banner, balloons, flowers and an outpouring of love.  During the ceremony, the student body lined up in front of Mrs. Greenwood like an army troop waiting for inspection. In a gesture that said it all, a second-grader brode the ranks, ran up to Mrs. Greenwood, threw her arms around her and gave her a hug.
