Located across from the original High School, the Campus was a favorite spot for malts and sodas. While the buildings look much the same, the Corner and Campus are no more. Submitted by Bill Grippo, BHS'62

In 1940 Evelyn Mills opened the Campus after her husband passed away. Charles Wacker, her brother-in-law, and Art Spader of Blue Moon Ice Cream Factory, located on Portland Avenue, encouraged her to open an ice cream parlor. Morris’s, an ice cream parlor located at Washington and Clinton Avenues, was relocating across the street. This presented an opportunity for Evelyn to start her own business. Evelyn named the store the Campus because of its location across from Roy W. Brown Middle School. With the help of Art Schneider, she decorated the booths, stools, and counters in blue to compliment the Blue Moon Ice Cream she sold. The Redskins, a Bergenfield football team, hung out at the Campus daily. Because these team members were well-behaved and just regular good guys, Evelyn closed the store one day and gave the team a spaghetti dinner. Other people you’d find helping out at the Campus included Evelyn’s daughters, Ruth and Betty; Lottie Vautin, her sister-in-law; and Charles Wacker, her brother-in-law. Evelyn would bootleg the Sunday newspaper and sell copies to her customers. Because of the Campus’s competitor across the street, Morris’s, she was not allowed to legally sell newspapers daily. In 1942 the Campus was then sold to the Feinsteins, who also had two daughters. If you have any memories you’d like to share about the Campus, please
